The M Power Studio is a one of a kind wellness center that provides individuals with private fitness and nutrition programs customized to their specific needs. The studio opened last July and has been a growing presence in Gaslight Village due to the customization of each individuals needs regarding health and fitness. Brent McCarrick, one of our personal trainers, has been given the floor to introduce himself.

I have been an athlete all my life – my parents started me at a young age. I grew up playing every sport imaginable, never wanting to come inside. In high school I played four varsity sports all four years: football, wrestling, baseball and track. Strength and conditioning played a huge part in my being able to play varsity all four years, and it also happened to be one of my favorite parts of playing sports. I ended up earning a track scholarship at Michigan State University and threw shot putt and discus for the Spartans. My love for sports and exercise lead me to earn my bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. I completed two internships before graduation, one with the Michigan State Strength and Conditioning Program and another at a cardiac rehab facility in Florida. I learned so much during these internships – they helped to form me in to the trainer and person that I am today!

After college, my now wife and I moved to South Florida so she could attend graduate school and so I could work as a personal trainer at a gym called 24 Hour Fitness. Within my first two years at that gym I gained four new certifications, trained over 2,000 clients and taught 450 group sessions, earning my title as a Master Trainer. I also developed a Strength and Conditioning program for one of the top tennis academies in the country, Nick Saviano’s High Performance Tennis Academy.  Working with some of the nation’s best tennis athletes was very fun and extremely rewarding! Many of the kids I worked with went on to earn tennis scholarships at top Universities.

My wife and I ended up moving back to Michigan to be closer to our families and I took a job at East Hills and the MAC here in Grand Rapids. I jumped right in and started teaching classes and working with the tennis program. Both my clients and fellow employees were wonderful to work with. When East Hills closed I was given the opportunity to work for The McCahill Group.

I now work as an Exercise Specialist/Rec. League Play Coordinator at Amway and a personal trainer at the M Power Studio. While at Amway I develop workouts, posters, handouts and presentations for both the fitness facility and the different outreaches for other departments. I also train clients one on one and teach group exercises classes.

Here at the M Power Studio I work with a wide range of clients – high school and college athletes trying to improve their sports performance, weekend warriors, stay at home mom’s, bariatric patients, and those recovering/rehabbing from various injuries. l write detailed workouts for each client depending on their goals and fitness levels and try to keep each workout fun and exciting all while working towards the client’s goals. By using different types of equipment from the TRX to the kettlebells provided and the cable functional trainer, it keeps the sessions I teach fun and fresh.

When I’m not training clients at the gym, I’m usually doing something active myself. My hobbies include lifting weights, mountain bike riding, trail running, hiking and playing with my two puppies. My wife and I love to travel and find different places to hike. Our favorite place as of now has been the Grand Canyon – such a beautiful area and a great place for a long hike! I am looking forward to our next trip to Colorado in a few months.
